The Cleveland Indians acquired relief pitcher Nick Wittgren from the Miami Marlins on Monday according to the Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

Cleveland will send a minor-league prospect to Miami in the deal.

Wittgren was designated for assignment last week after the Marlins signed free agent second baseman Neil Walker.

The 27-year-old right hander had spent his entire professional career with Miami after they selected him in the ninth round of the 2012 amateur draft out of Purdue University, now he’ll return to the Midwest as he’ll add some depth to the Indians bullpen who has lost some pieces this offseason.

In 2018, Wittgren went 2-1 with a 2.94 ERA in 32 appearances (33.2 innings pitched). He struck out 31 batters while walking 15 and finished six games for the Marlins who went 63-98, finishing last in the National League East division.

In his three years in the big leagues, Wittgren is 9-5 with a 3.60 ERA in 118 appearances.

Against right handed batters, Wittgren has held hitters to a .241 average with a .284 on base percentage and a .705 OPS. Against left handed batters, he’s held them to a .269 average with a .332 on base percentage and a .702 OPS.

His fastball tops around 92 MPH and relies on it a lot as he threw it 72% of the time during the 2018 season. He also uses a slider and a changeup.

The Indians will control him through the 2022 season and he’ll go up for arbitration next offseason.

He’ll likely compete for a bullpen spot during spring training with Jefry Rodriguez and Tyler Olson along with Adam Plutko as it would appear Brad Hand, Adam Cimber, Dan Otero, Neil Ramirez and Oliver Perez should be locks for the Opening Day roster.
