Rajai Davis returns to Indians on minor league deal

A familiar face has returned to the Indians organization on a spring training invite.

Veteran outfielder Rajai Davis has signed a minor league deal with the club with an invite to join the Major League Spring Training.

Davis spent the 2017 season with the Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox after spending the 2016 season in Cleveland with the Indians.

In 117 games, he hit .235 with 5 home runs, 20 runs batted in and 29 stolen bases.

You may remember a home run he hit in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series.

Although the Indians didn’t ultimately win that Game 7, Davis became a fan favorite for his heroics on that November night fifteen months ago.

In the 2016 season, Davis played 134 games and hit .249 with 12 home runs, 49 runs batted in and an American League leading 43 stolen bases.

Over his 12 year career, the 37 year old is a lifetime .264 hitter with 1,062 hits, 60 home runs, 373 runs batted in and 394 stolen bases.

While he’s not a guarantee to make the major league roster, there’s no doubt he’s a great locker room guy and teammate to have in the clubhouse and obviously it showed when he arrived in Goodyear, Arizona today.

Looking at the current Indians outfield depth chart, Davis will have to compete with the likes of Melvin Upton Jr, Abraham Almonte, Tyler Naquin, Brandon Guyer and Greg Allen for a roster spot.

Michael Brantley, Lonnie Chisenhall and Bradley Zimmer are practically guaranteed locks to make the opening day roster although Brantley’s status is undetermined as he continues to rehab from ankle surgery.

Even if Davis doesn’t make the opening day roster, having him in the minors could be handy for the Indians if an injury happens and they need to call up a guy. Davis is familiar with the organization, Progressive Field as well as a number of the guys he was a teammate of during that 2016 season.

Having Davis back is an added bonus to a club that’ll be in the hunt for a World Series championship and who knows, he may be called upon for another clutch moment come late October.
