The Cleveland Browns selected Florida defensive tackle Caleb Brantley  at the top of the sixth round on Saturday.

Browns got a steal in terms of talent but are taking a risk due to his recent off the field issues.

Brantley was charged in early April with a misdemeanor after he was allegedly involved in an altercation with a woman where the woman was knocked unconscious.

It’s still under investigation and dropped his draft stock significantly. Some had Brantley as high as a late first round pick before the incident.

Also didn’t help that he showed up at his pro day 12 pounds overweight according to NFL Draft analyst Mike Mayock and Brantley struggled in the drills. 

On the field though, Brantley was a playmaker at the defensive tackle position. 

He was voted second team All-SEC last season after leading the Gators with 6.5 tackles for a loss and also had 2.5 sacks in ten starts.

In 2015, he had 6.5 tackles for a loss and three sacks in 10 starts.

As a freshman in 2014, he had 21 tackles (four for a loss) in 12 games.

If he can keep his head on straight and betters his work ethic, he’ll compete for the 3-Tech defensive tackle spot with third round pick Larry Ogunjobi as well as Jamie Meder and Desmond Bryant.

 Powerful, stout defensive tackle with the quickness to play the three-technique and the power to play the nose. Brantley has the talent and traits that should appeal to both two-gap and one-gap defenses. While we haven’t seen Brantley play in even half of Florida’s defensive snaps in a single year, the talent is there to become an early starter and a defensive force up front.
