It’s the NFL Draft and the Browns have traded down, a tradition unlike any other.
The Cleveland Browns traded the 12th overall pick to the Houston Texans. In exchange, the Browns received the 25th overall pick in this year’s draft and Houston’s first round pick in the 2018 Draft.
Houston selected Clemson QB Deshaun Watson with the 12th pick, who I was told during the pre-draft process was a quarterback that head coach Hue Jackson liked. I guess he didn’t like him that much or the Browns would’ve selected him themselves.
There was a ton of talent on the board for the Browns to select including:
- Alabama DL Jonathan Allen
- Ohio State S Malik Hooker
- Alabama LB Reuben Foster
- Alabama TE OJ Howard
I think that once Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes II was selected 10th overall by the Kansas City Chiefs, who I believe was the target for the Browns that they decided to move down.
Adding a 2018 first round pick gives them two first round picks again to go along with three second round picks, one of which they acquired from Houston in March when they got Houston’s second round pick along with quarterback Brock Osweiler.
I know Cleveland fans are going to complain that the Browns passed on talent and traded down again but some of the defensive talent like Hooker, Allen and Foster continue to fall down the board as I write this.
There’s also a chance the Browns move up if one of those guys continue to fall, and they have a lot of picks to make it happen.
As for the quarterback position, the Browns don’t need to force a selection if the organization isn’t in agreement with it. I know Watson is a talented quarterback who is angry that Trubisky and Mahomes went ahead of him after all he accomplished in college. He has a huge chip on his shoulder and will work hard to make teams pay.
The Browns forced Brady Quinn, Brandon Weeden and Johnny Manziel and it got those general managers and head coaches fired. They may draft a quarterback at some point in this draft but it has to be right for everyone involved.
I’ve heard rumors that they like Cal quarterback Davis Webb who could be there with the 25th pick or their 33rd pick when the second round begins tomorrow. I’d also watch for Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs in the late second or third round.
