Report: Gabriel Arias Being Called Up to Guardians

One of the Cleveland Guardians’ top prospects will reportedly be making his major league debut on Wednesday.

Shortstop Gabriel Arias will be promoted to the major league club for the team’s doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox according to Andrea Alejandra Gil.

The team hasn’t officially announced the move but with the team being able to carry an extra player on the 28-man roster for the doubleheader, the move seems inevitable.

Arias is the Guardians’ #3 prospect in their system according to MLB.com and his major league debut was expected at anytime during this 2022 season.

Cleveland acquired Arias from San Diego two seasons ago in the Mike Clevinger trade which has proven to be successful for Cleveland so far with the additions of Cal Quantrill, Josh Naylor, Austin Hedges and Owen Miller who are all on the major league roster currently.

The 22-year-old impressed during spring training hitting .571 (8 for 14) in 16 plate appearances, scoring four runs and driving in three more in seven games. He was optioned to Columbus where in nine games (40 plate appearances, 36 at-bats), Arias has hit .278 with one home run, six runs batted in, and a stolen base for the Clippers.

It’s unknown whether it’ll be a short stint for Arias or if the team will decide to proceed forward with Arias instead of Ernie Clement who has been solid in a utility role early on this season or decide to move on from Yu Chang who is currently on the injured list and is out of options.
