Akron has fired football head coach Terry Bowden after seven seasons with the program according to Yahoo Sports.

Bowden was 35-52 (23-33 against the MAC) during his tenure at Akron but no doubt he’s leaving the program in a better spot than it was when he took it over.

He was hired in December of 2011, taking over the position left by Rob Ianello who was 2-22 in two seasons as the Zips head coach.

In his first season, he went 1-11 but slowly got the team headed in the right direction.

Going 5-7 in both 2013 and 2014 and the team was competitive including an almost upset against Michigan in 2013 but coming up short in a 28-24 loss.

In 2015, the Zips went 8-5 and won their first bowl game in school history when they defeated Utah State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

After another 5-7 season, the Zips took a step forward in 2017 going 7-5 and winning the East Division in the MAC. However, they lost the MAC Championship to Toledo 45-28 and then 50-3 to Florida Atlantic in the Boca Raton Bowl to finish the season at 7-7.

This season started off strong for the Zips with a huge win in Week 3 against Northwestern who eventually won the Big Ten West Division and retaining the Wagon Wheel against their arch rival Kent State.

After a 4-3 start to the season, many thought the Zips were heading to another bowl game but the team took a step backwards and lost their final five games including a 28-3 loss to South Carolina on Saturday.

It’ll be interesting to see who the Zips will hire as their next head coach and it looks like they could be looking for an offensive minded head coach based on athletic director Larry Williams’ comments to the Akron Beacon Journal.

“We’re currently ranked 127th out of 130th in total offense”
