The Ohio State football program fired wide receivers coach Zach Smith on Monday evening after several allegations of domestic violence have been made public against Smith.

Smith had been with the Buckeyes coaching staff since Urban Meyer’s arrival in 2012 and this is the first assistant Meyer has fired in his 17 years as a college football head coach.

The latest situation revolves around a domestic violence civil order filed against Smith by his ex-wife Courtney Smith on Friday. Back in May, Smith was charged with trespassing which he has pled not guilty towards after officers told him to not drop off their children at his ex-wife’s apartment but Smith dropped him off at the apartment anyways.

In 2009, Smith was arrested for aggravated battery on a pregnant victim when Zach and Courtney were married and she was 8-10 weeks pregnant. She later dropped the charges.

In 2015, Smith was arrested once again on felony counts of domestic violence and felonious assault against Courtney Smith. According to SB Nation, the case is unresolved.

With this being serious allegations, Ohio State acted quickly and decided to terminate Smith. Reports are surfacing that head coach Urban Meyer allowed Smith to interview for multiple jobs this offseason so one would believe that Meyer knew about these allegations and was trying to get him off his staff without firing him so the university wouldn’t have to pay him.

Meyer will speak with the media on Tuesday for Big Ten Media Day and I’m sure he’ll be asked questions about Smith.

As for Smith’s replacement, former Buckeyes, Dolphins and Browns wide receiver Brian Hartline who has been the team’s quality control coach since March of 2017 will be the team’s interim wide receiver coach according to Austin Ward of Lettermen Row.
