I’d still draft Rosen or Darnold if I’m the Browns

Browns hold all the cards at the top of the draft with two elite QB prospects in their grasp

The Browns football community is buzzing right now with the reports and comments surrounding UCLA quarterback and potential NFL Draft prospect Josh Rosen.

Rosen hasn’t declared yet but he’s right now one of the top two rated quarterbacks in the 2018 NFL Draft along with USC’s Sam Darnold who either one of them could be the first overall pick by the Cleveland Browns.

Darnold, who also hasn’t declared yet denied a report last month that he would stay in school to avoid being drafted by Cleveland but Rosen allegedly will stay in school if Cleveland wants him.

A report came out Sunday morning from ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Rosen prefers to play for the New York Giants who currently own the second overall pick due to the franchise being much more stable than Cleveland has been.

Rosen met with the media on Tuesday prior to the Cactus Bowl which he’s not playing in due to still being in the concussion protocol and had this to say:

When it comes to the draft prospects especially the quarterbacks, I can’t blame them for wanting to go to a good situation where they can grow as a player instead of a situation like Cleveland which hasn’t been a good situation for some time.

Everyone remembers last year around this time when Myles Garrett made a video pleading the Dallas Cowboys to trade up to take him. He has since been taken by the Browns and has embraced the city and the fans just like every other player has once they get to Cleveland.

If I’m Browns general manager John Dorsey, I’m taking the best player available with the first overall pick regardless of their preference or stance on the situation. CBS NFL reporter Jason La Canfora said to 92.3 the Fan on Tuesday that the Browns are definitely taking a quarterback at the top of the draft and I agree.

My personal preference right now is Rosen but I’m also adding a veteran or two to the quarterback room and sitting either one of them until they’re ready with them both being just 21 years old by the time training camp begins next July.

The Browns failed to do this with current starting quarterback DeShone Kizer and I think it’s a big reason why he’s struggled mightly during this season.

The Browns have been looking for the franchise quarterback since Tim Couch didn’t work out here after the 2003 season. They haven’t taken a quarterback at the top of the draft since Couch in 1999 and they’ve had the opportunity the last couple drafts but either traded down or took the best overall player which they did in Garrett.

Even if Darnold or Rosen pull a move like John Elway in 1983 and Eli Manning in 2004 and refuse to play for the Browns, they should still take them and hold them up for ransom for the New York Giants or any quarterback needy team and collect some future draft capital but also don’t fall too far to still grab some of the top prospects at other positions.
