Mike Singletary to Browns?

The rumor mill keeps on churning about the Cleveland Browns and future of the organization.

However, this rumor is legit and has validity to it.

Former ESPN Cleveland and WTAM 1100 employee Will Burge reported that the Browns interviewed former 49ers head coach Mike Singletary last week.

It’s interesting that Singletary was with Gregg Williams on the defensive staff last season in Los Angeles. If he was being added to the current staff, I don’t think an interview would be necessary and Williams would just add him to the staff.

As a player, Singletary was the heart and soul of the dominant Bears defenses during the 1980s which was highlighted by the 1985 team that went 15-1 and won Super Bowl XX.

“Samurai Mike” was elected to ten consecutive Pro Bowls (1983-1992), eight first team All-Pro selections (1983-1989, 1991) and was twice named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year (1985 and 1988).

Singletary was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1998.

Singletary has been an NFL coach since 2003 starting as the linebacker coach for the Baltimore Ravens. He spent two and a half seasons (2008-2010) as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, compiling an 18-22 record during that time.

His head coaching tenure is more known for his outlandish remarks during press conferences than it was for his coaching.

Since then he’s spent time as the linebackers coach with the Minnesota Vikings (2011-2013) and last year as a defensive assistant with the Los Angeles Rams.

NFL Insider Benjamin Allbright reported that Singletary isn’t being looked at as a potential head coach and also added to that

I’m not sure what kind of role Singletary would have. He’s been an assistant head coach in both San Francisco and Minnesota so that’s a potential role under Hue Jackson if he’s brought back for a third season.

If other coaches have been interviewed like Allbright reported, makes you wonder if Jackson is being brought back that he’s finally looking for an offensive coordinator to help relieve some of the responsibility Jackson has taken control of since being named head coach in January 2016.
