Indians season ends in collapse

This one is going to hurt for awhile.

The Cleveland Indians season came to an end Wednesday night at the hands of the New York Yankees in a 5-2 loss in Game 5 of the American League Division Series.

For the second year in a row, the season ends with a collapse of a series lead of two games.

Have to give credit to the Yankees though, with their backs against the walls and especially after blowing a 8-3 lead in Game 2, they never panicked and have won four elimination games in a row when practically everyone wrote them off heading into the postseason.

Didi Gregorius sent the tone early with two home runs off Corey Kluber to give the Yankees an early 3-0 lead.

Former Indian CC Sabathia looked phenomenal early with nine strikeouts in 4.1 innings before the Indians tacked him with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. David Robertson and Aroldis Chapman finished the job with 4.2 innings combined giving up no hits, two walks and recorded 6 strikeouts combined.

Kluber lasted only 3.2 innings, giving up three hits and three earned runs. The Indians bullpen came in and performed strong in relief of Kluber. Andrew Miller, Bryan Shaw, Cody Allen, and Joe Smith combined went 5.1 innings, gave up five hits, one earned run and ten strikeouts.

The Indians stayed in it until a Brett Gardner single in the top of the 9th combined with a throwing error by Jay Bruce scored two for the Yankees to put the dagger in Cleveland’s heart.

The Indians defense was atrocious in the final two games of the series with seven combined errors for what was a highly praised defensive team.

New York advances to the American League Championship Series to face the Houston Astros, the first time in five seasons the Yankees will battle for the American League pennant.

As for Cleveland, it’ll be an interesting offseason ahead for the organization.

Key pieces like Jay Bruce, Carlos Santana, Joe Smith and Bryan Shaw are free agents and Michael Brantley has an $11 million dollar club option. It’ll be interesting to see what the team does this offseason to try and make another World Series run next year.

People can try to say it was a good season with the 22 game winning streak and having 100 wins for the third time in franchise history but this team was the best in the American League and the World Series favorites but they choked a 2-0 lead and this season is considered a disappointment.
