Browns initial 53 man roster is set

The Browns made the final cuts on Saturday to bring their roster down to 53 players.

Here’s who made the initial roster

Quarterback: DeShone Kizer, Cody Kessler, Kevin Hogan

Running Back: Isaiah Crowell, Duke Johnson, Matthew Dayes

Fullback: Dan Vitale

Wide Receiver: Kenny Britt, Corey Coleman, Sammie Coates, Ricardo Louis, Rashard Higgins

Tight End: David Njoku, Seth DeValve, Randall Telfer

Offensive Line: Joe Thomas, Joel Bitonio, JC Tretter, Kevin Zeitler, Shon Coleman, Rod Johnson, Marcus Martin, Spencer Drango, Austin Reiter, Zach Sterup

Defensive Line: Myles Garrett, Danny Shelton, Trevon Coley, Emmanuel Ogbah, Caleb Brantley, Tyrone Holmes, Jamie Meder, Carl Nassib, Larry Ogunjobi, Nate Orchard

Linebackers: Jamie Collins, Christian Kirksey, Joe Schobert, Dominique Alexander, James Burgess

Defensive Backs: Jamar Taylor, Briean Boddy-Calhoun, Jason McCourty, Marcus Burley, Darius Hillary, Jabrill Peppers, Derrick Kindred, Ibraheim Campbell, Calvin Pryor, Kai Nacua

Special Teams: Zane Gonzalez, Britton Colquitt, Charley Hughlett

Now I’ll reiterate it, this isn’t the final roster heading into the regular season. Any player waived by NFL teams today that has four or less years experience is subject to waivers. The Browns can claim any of those players they are interested in.

Sunday at noon, the waiver claims will start to be announced. The browns are first in the waiver roster and will get the first crack at all players waived.

If a player was released outright, they’re free to sign with any team they want immediately.

Looking at the initial roster, I see several position groups that need addressed and I believe will be addressed by the Browns management and coaching staff.

Wide Receiver: despite acquiring Sammie Coates from Pittsburgh, the position needs upgraded. I think Higgins will be the odd man out and I can see the Browns adding two to three more on Sunday.

Linebacker: Outside of Kirksey, Schobert and Collins, the position needs depth behind those guys. Alexander will likely stay put but Burgess will be the odd man out in my opinion.

Quarterback: I think a veteran needs to be added to the room as a mentor for Kizer as well as Kessler or Hogan. One of them will likely be released with Kessler the most likely.

Cornerback: they could use some depth at this position also. McCourty, Taylor and Boddy-Calhoun are safe but Burley and Hillary are in danger of not being here after Sunday.

Other players I believe to be in danger of losing their spot: Spencer Drango, Marcus Martin, Caleb Brantley, Tyrone Holmes, Nate Orchard, Calvin Pryor

Also take note that offensive lineman Rod Johnson will likely be placed on injured reserve with a knee injury but is expected to be healthy around midseason which is why I think ten offensive lineman made the initial roster.
