The Browns just wrapped up another day of training camp. Here’s some news and notes from the day
QB Decision
Head coach Hue Jackson told reporters that he’ll name the starting quarterback against the New York Giants on Wednesday. It’ll be either Brock Osweiler or DeShone Kizer as that’s been the only two getting snaps with the first team offense.
I’d expect Hue will continue ahead with Osweiler as the quarterback but like I’ve written the last several days, Kizer is riding a wave of momentum and wouldn’t be surprised if the rookie gets his first taste as an NFL starting quarterback this coming Monday.
Gregg Williams meets with the media
Browns defensive coordinator Gregg Williams met with the media on Tuesday, offering some high praise for rookie first round picks Myles Garrett and Jabrill Peppers.
Williams said that Garrett has progressed as fast as any top draft pick he’s had the honor of coaching. He also said he excelled against the run and everything they asked him to do as a pass rusher against New Orleans, pointing out that if you watched the tape, you’d notice that the Saints offensive players were pointing at him.
In regards to Peppers, he said he’s a football player in that there’s no distinct position to place him at. He added that he’s been focused on practice and that they have almost exposed to everything he’ll do defensively. Also added we may see him at the middle linebacker position at some point.
Williams was hard on veteran cornerback Joe Haden when he first arrived as defensive coordinator but said he’s very pleased with him so far. He stated that Haden played some of his most physical football during Monday’s practice session but also stated that Haden needs to stay healthy.
When talking about the defense as a whole, Williams said it’s been solid. He stated that everyone who is on this defense should make an NFL roster if they don’t make the Browns because when other teams watch the tape, they’ll see how hard the guys on defense have played for Williams and the defensive staff.
Kicking Competition
There’s many battles going on in Berea for positions on the Browns roster including the kicker position.
Rookie Zane Gonzalez and veteran Cody Parkey are the two guys fighting for that spot.
Akron Beacon Journal Browns beat writer Nate Ulrich tweeted Tuesday night that Parkey has been winning the duel so far through camp but Gonzalez won the battle on Tuesday.
Gonzalez went 5-5 on his attempts while Parkey went 3-5.
The rookie has been the favorite of the fan base so far and this battle will come down to the final preseason game.
Injuries
Left guard Joel Bitonio had a injury scare during team drills when he was slow to get up following a play. Local media members reported he was smiling when he was talking to teammates and trainers. Bitonio is coming back from a season ending Lisfranc injury last season.
Rookie defensive lineman Caleb Brantley is now dealing with a shoulder injury according to Coach Jackson. Brantley did not practice on Tuesday, just a few days after returning to the field after suffering a broken finger early in camp. Coach Jackson added the injury isn’t believed to be serious.
Safety Ibraheim Campbell is still out with a concussion.
Take another lap Cam
Offensive lineman Cam Erving once again had to take a lap for a false start penalty on Tuesday. He now has had to run two laps since Coach Jackson implemented the punishment following the Saints game where the team had 12 penalties.
Erving struggled with two penalties in that game and it seems as if the third year player can’t gain any confidence with his continuing poor performances.
Makes you wonder how much longer his tenure in Cleveland will last.
Cam Erving…To whomever will give a 4th round draft pick! To high…to low! What would you expect?
