Lebron James shared his frustration with the Cleveland Cavaliers to the media last week following a loss, most notably saying the team needed depth and a “playmaker”.
The team is on the search for that playmaker.
Wednesday, the team will host a workout with three notable players.
- Guard/Forward Lance Stephenson
- Point Guard Mario Chalmers
- Point Guard Kirk Hinrich
The Cavs currently hold an open roster spot and have since they traded Mike Dunleavy and Mo Williams in the Kyle Korver trade and haven’t filled it since.
Chris Haynes of ESPN was the first to report about the workout and said other free agents will also be at the workout.
Backup point guard is a glaring hole on the roster right now and the playing time is currently being used by rookie Kay Felder who’s shown flashes but is still not ready to be a major contributor to a contending team.
Mario Chalmers spent four seasons as a teammate of Lebron James with the Miami Heat from 2010 to 2014. Chalmers spent last season with Miami and Memphis before having a season ending Achilles injury which has sidelined him for this season.
Chalmers can shoot the ball well enough and he’s also a defensive guy which the Cavs are lacking. He also averages 4 assists per game so he can dish the ball out to his teammates
Lance Stephenson was a shocking name in the report. He has a history with Lebron James going back to their Eastern Conference Finals matchup a couple years back when Stephenson blew in Lebron’s ear to try and get him to lose focus. Now I think Lebron knows Stephenson has talent and will let the past go.
Stephenson is a head case though and has been on three teams in the past year (Clippers, Grizzlies, Pelicans). His best year was in Indiana in 2013-2014 where he averaged 13.8 points, 4.6 assists and 7.2 rebounds per game on a 56 win Pacers team.
Stephenson was with New Orleans at the beginning of the season but was waived after six games after having to undergo groin surgery and hasn’t played since.
Kirk Hinrich came into the NBA the same year as Lebron, 2003. The 36 year old played for both Chicago and Atlanta only appearing in 46 games (7 starts). He appeared in six playoff games but only averaged 4.5 minutes per game.
I’m not sure how much he can actually contribute to this Cavs team but I’m sure this workout will tell us if he has anything left in the tank.
If I had to sign one of these players right now, it’d be Lance Stephenson. Chalmers is unknown because of the Achilles injury and Hinrich is at the end of the road as a NBA player and the Cavs need guys who can play.
Stephenson should be good to go after the groin surgery. He’s only 26 years old, is a wing player which is another need on the roster with JR Smith out till late March/early April. He can rebound and distribute the ball to the number of shooters on this Cavs team.
The Cavs could also look to waive Chris Andersen who is out with a torn ACL and using a roster spot. If the Cavs are impressed with multiple players and they want them on this team, they’ll make the moves necessary to get those guys on the roster.
