Ron Wolf to consult with Browns?

635496082675540008-Ron-WolfAs we are one week away from the end of the Browns season and what is headed towards another firing season in Berea, rumors are starting to swirl about what the Browns might possibly do. The latest one features a newly inducted Hall of Famer who helped restore the Green Bay Packers back to glory in the 1990s.

Wolf, 75, retired from full time work in the NFL in 2001 after a 38 year career that started out as a scout with the Raiders back in 1963. He worked for the Raiders from 1963 to 1974. After a failed stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he returned to the Raiders for another 10 years helping build two Super Bowl championship teams. In 1991, he was hired as Green Bay Packers general manager. He hired Mike Holmgren as head coach and traded for then troubled quarterback Brett Favre. The three would bring a Super Bowl championship back to Green Bay in 1996 and the Packers had a .639 winning percentage during Wolf’s time as general manager. Wolf was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame earlier this year.

If the rumors do become true, this won’t be Wolf’s first encounter with the Cleveland Browns. Wolf was hired by the Browns back in 2004 as a “Personnel Specialist”. but Wolf left the franchise after only four months due to Butch Davis’ behavior towards others. Wolf also recommended Mike Holmgren to then Browns owner Randy Lerner which Lerner took the recommendation when Holmgren was hired as team president back in 2011.

I would love to see Wolf hired as a consultant. Jimmy Haslam needs to have a strong voice in his ear to help him with this next search for a general manager and head coach if Haslam decides to fire Ray Farmer and Mike Pettine. Wolf was a consultant for the New York Jets last year which led to the hire of head coach Todd Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan and the Jets have turned things around with a 10-5 record and heading to the postseason. Wolf’s knowledge and guidance can help Haslam put the right people in place to get the Browns finally headed in the right direction. One possible hire Wolf could recommend is his son Eliot Wolf. Eliot is the currrent Director of Pro Personnel of the Green Bay Packers and his name has been thrown around as a general manager candidate by the national media.
