It’s Draft Week and it’s as good of a time as ever to dive back into the past of the Cleveland Browns and their previous selections at each of the 2024 picks the team currently holds (54, 85, 156, 206, 227, 243.

The Browns have held the 85th pick four previous times in franchise history with one being a notable part of the team’s history since it’s return in 1999.

1955: Jack Locklear, Center, Auburn

Locklear was Cleveland’s seventh-round selection in 1955 but never appeared in an NFL game.

1956: Chuck Griffith, Wide Receiver, USC

Griffith was Cleveland’s seventh-round selection in 1956 but never appeared in an NFL game.

1991: Pio Sagapolutele, Defensive Line, San Diego State

One of Bill Belchick’s first draft picks in Cleveland, Sagapolutele was the Browns’ fourth-round pick back in 1991 and spent five seasons with the team with 56 tackles and two sacks over that span. After his tenure with the Browns, he spent time in New England and New Orleans before retiring after the 1997 season.

Cleveland Browns will remember the Colt McCoy era all too well. Despite being the team’s third-round pick in 2010, the hype was surrounding him after a successful collegiate career for the Texas Longhorns.

Even though the plan was for him to sit behind Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace, those plans never go the way they were envisioned and he was thrusted out into the field early in his rookie season. Upset victories against New Orleans and New England and nearly defeating the New York Jets had Browns fans thinking McCoy could be the answer at quarterback however the poor offensive line led to numerous sacks and eventually knocking McCoy out and off the field towards the end of 2010.

He was the starting quarterback in 2011 but the same woes continued for McCoy including the memorable knockout hit from James Harrison on national television which led to a rift between McCoy’s family and the organization. The Browns moved on from him as the starting quarterback with the selection of Brandon Weeden in the 2012 NFL Draft and after the 2012 season, Cleveland traded him to San Francisco.

McCoy ended up having a lengthy NFL career playing until 2022 with San Francisco, Washington, New York, and Arizona and while he hasn’t officially retired, his NFL career has likely ended.
