Football officially returns this week with the Cleveland Browns and New York Jets battling in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio.

The majority of the Browns roster would appear to be set in stone but just like every other team in the NFL, there’s battles for those final roster spots especially in some key position rooms. Here are some of the battles to watch throughout the preseason.

Running Back (Demetric Felton/John Kelly/Hassan Hall)

The top two spots in the running back are locked in with Nick Chubb and Jerome Ford but the battle will be who is behind them on the depth chart.

Felton is entering his third season with the team and is back in the running back room after spending the last two seasons with the wide receivers. Kelly has been around the Browns the last three seasons and shined in the preseason last year with 37 carries for 117 yards and a touchdown. Hall signed as an undrafted free agent this past April and can also play a role on special teams.

Offensive Line Depth (Michael Dunn, Drew Forbes, Nick Harris, Colby Gossett, Luke Wypler, James Hudson, Dawand Jones)

The starting unit is returning all five starters but the battle will be behind them as Andrew Berry, Kevin Stefanski and position coach Bill Callahan fill out the room.

Jones and Hudson should be the reserve tackles but the interior depth is the main focal point of this competition. Dunn, Harris, and Forbes have been with the organization for several seasons while Gossett has been around the league and Wypler was the team’s last draft selection in April.

Defensive Tackle (Jordan Elliott, Maurice Hurst, Trysten Hill, Tommy Togiai)

The position got stronger during the offseason with the additions of Dalvin Tomlinson and Siaka Ika but still one of the weak links to the Browns roster currently.

Elliott is entering his final year under contract and has been getting the first crack of starting reps alongside Tomlinson. Hurst and Hill signed minimal contracts and should be considered lottery tickets at this point. Togiai has yet to show any form of impact since being drafted in 2021. Still not ruling out another addition to this room.

Linebacker Depth (Jacob Phillips, Tony Fields, Jordan Kunaszyk, Mohamoud Diabete)

Training camp started off with good news as Anthony Walker and Sione Takitaki weren’t placed on the PUP list following season ending injuries last year. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah is entering his third year and it needs to be a big one for any potential future with the Browns.

Behind them is where it starts to get tricky filling out the room. Matthew Adams, who Special Teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone knows well is sidelined with a calf injury and will be out the next few weeks. Phillips and Fields likely have the edge being former draft picks of general manager Andrew Berry but injuries and lack of production don’t give them a strong case. Kunaszyk was a special teams ace in 2022 so that could help his cause. Diabete was guaranteed big time money as an undrafted free agent in April.

Fourth Safety (Ronnie Hickman, D’Anthony Bell, Bubba Bolden)

Cleveland overhauled their safety room in the offseason adding Juan Thornhill and Rodney McLeod and expectations for Grant Delpit to make a leap in his fourth season.

Bell made the roster last season as an undrafted free agent and made 14 tackles as a reserve but he has some competition in Hickman, who the Browns gave $200,000 guaranteed this past April and Bolden who spent last season on Cleveland’s practice squad.
