With Friday’s unfortunate news regarding Marquise Goodwin’s health, it would seem that a spot in the Browns wide receiver room opened up with the uncertainty of the veteran’s status for the 2023 season.
Heading into training camp, it was apparent that Amari Cooper, Donovan Peoples-Jones, Elijah Moore, Cedric Tillman, and David Bell were locks to make the roster. If Goodwin can’t return to the field, there’s one spot in the position group open for competition through training camp and the preseason, let’s take a look at the possibilities.
Jakeem Grant
Grant should be considered the leader in the clubhouse as of now because of his play making ability and 4.38 speed. In his seven-year career, he has touchdown catches of 18, 25, 46, 52, and 65 yards so that big-play threat is there.
However, he’s coming off an Achilles injury that sidelined him for the entire 2022 season. He’s also never caught more than 36 targets in a single season and with a crop of young guys behind him, it’ll be interesting to see what direction the Browns might lean in the final cutdowns.
Daylen Baldwin
The former Michigan product made a strong impression last year during the preseason that landed him a spot on the practice squad and made one regular-season appearance against the Ravens catching both targets for 25 yards.
Although Baldwin doesn’t have speed, he’s got good size to be an NFL wide receiver (6’2, 212 lbs) and has proven to have the trust of quarterback Deshaun Watson when targeted. Another solid preseason could earn him the final spot in the position group.

Jaleon Darden
Darden joined the Browns late last season to potentially provide a spark in the return game but didn’t see much action in two games.
The second-year pro was dynamic during his college career at North Texas with 2,782 receiving yards and 609 return yards in four years. He also displayed that in his rookie season with Tampa Bay having 555 return yards.
If he can show he can be a situational type receiver in the role Goodwin is expected to have, he could make a strong case to make the roster.
Mike Harley Jr.
The former Hurricane was an undrafted free agent signing in 2022 and despite having six catches for 68 yards last preseason, Harley Jr. didn’t make the roster and spent last year on the practice squad.
He’s getting another opportunity this year and could make a strong case with plenty of playing time this preseason including an extra game. If you aren’t familiar with his background, he left Miami as the all-time receptions leader, seventh in receiving yards and ninth in touchdown catches.
