The Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly finalizing terms with free agent guard David Nwaba. Shams Charnia of Yahoo Sports was the first to report the deal.

The Cavaliers have been talking to the 25-year-old guard since the opening of free agency on July 1 and according to Charnia, the two sides met last week in Las Vegas.

Nwaba spent last season with the Chicago Bulls and started in 21 of the 70 games he appeared in. Averaging 23.5 minutes per game, Nwaba averaged 7.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 0.8 steals per game for Chicago.

He was undrafted in 2016 after playing college basketball at Cal Poly for three seasons averaging 11.9 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game in his college career.

He made the 2017 D-League All-Defensive and All-Rookie team while playing for Los Angeles D-Fenders and it earned him a shot with the Lakers. Nwaba made his NBA debut in February 2017 and appeared in 20 games averaging 6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game while averaging 19.9 minutes per contest.

When reading up on scouting reports, his best asset is his defensive play. He has the quickness to follow guards and people have said he has the strength to match up with some front court players inside.

His offensive game isn’t the strongest but being around guys like Kyle Korver and J.R. Smith, maybe he could develop a decent offensive game to pair with his defense.

The Cavaliers have needed solid defensive players on the roster the last couple seasons and the addition of Nwaba could be a much needed fit with how the roster is currently constructed. Nwaba along with Sexton could be a great defensive backcourt to match up against teams such as Boston with Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward/Jayson Tatum.

Also looking at how the roster currently looks, there is a lot of guards which would make one think another roster move could be on the horizon.

George Hill, J.R. Smith and Kyle Korver are all players at the guard position that have been involved in trade rumors throughout the summer.

With the addition of Nwaba, perhaps Cleveland has a deal lined up to move Korver who has been linked to Philadelphia or Smith who has recently been linked to the Houston Rockets. It’s also possible the team could buyout George Hill who is due $19 million this upcoming season.
