The MLB Trade Deadline has come and the Cleveland Indians made one trade on Tuesday to help them defensively in the outfield.

They acquired center fielder Leonys Martin from the Detroit Tigers along with minor league pitcher Kyle Dowdy for shortstop prospect Willi Castro.

Castro was the Indians eighth overall prospect according to MLB.com and was most recently with the Akron Rubberducks, the team’s Double A affiliate.

This season in Akron, the 21-year-old prospect was hitting .245 with 5 home runs, 39 runs batted in and 13 stolen bases in 97 games (410 plate appearances).

As for the Indians, they needed to get another outfielder with Bradley Zimmer out for the season, Lonnie Chisenhall out till late September and Tyler Naquin just recently going onto the disabled list.

Martin is now joining his fourth team in the last calendar year as he was with the Mariners at this time a year ago, he was then traded to the Chicago Cubs on August 31, 2017. He signed with the Detroit Tigers last offseason on a one year deal.

The Indians will control him through the 2019 season as he will be up for arbitration this coming offseason.

This season for Detroit, Martin has played in 78 games and has made 336 plate appearances, hitting for .251 with 9 home runs, 29 runs batted in and 7 stolen bases. His on base percentage is .321, slugging .409 and an OPS of .731.

As a fielder this season, he’s been one of the best in baseball with nine assists as an outfielder which is the best of any outfielder in the American League. His 228 putouts are 3rd best by an outfielder in the American League. He’s committed only 2 errors this season and 10 errors his entire career.

Throughout his eight-year career with Texas, Seattle, Chicago and Detroit he’s a lifetime .248 hitter with 47 home runs, 205 runs batted in and 122 stolen bases.

Kyle Dowdy was a 12th round selection by the Tigers in the 2015 MLB Draft out of the University of Houston. He was in Erie, the Tigers Double A affiliate prior to the trade.

He’s spent time as both a starter and a reliever this season in Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo. As a starter, he’s 7-7 with a 5.43 ERA in 14 appearances. As a reliever, he’s 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in ten appearances.

Dowdy has let opposing left handed batters hit .246 while right handed batters have hit .308 against him. The Indians have assigned him to Double-A Akron.
